What is Water Mitigation? Why is Water Mitigation Important?

As per the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), water mitigation is a pross by which an effort is made to reduce the loss of life and property by lessening the impact of disasters.

Therefore, water mitigation is a process through which the level damage water can do is prevented or reduced. Water can create major damages through flood, storm, burst pipe or leak.

When mitigation is done, the earlier it is done, it will be more effective. Water when sits in a damaged area for a long time, it will do more damages. The longer it sits, the damage will be increasingly more drastic. Also, stagnant, sitting water may lead to the development of microbial growth, carpet or flooring damage, irreversible content damage, and cracks in the foundation, etc.

No one can know exactly when one will face water-related disasters, and the costs of water damage are unpredictable. Therefore, it is wise to call for a water mitigation company as soon as you can to start the process of mitigation on time.

A few things you can do till the water mitigation team arrives at the spot:

  • Find the main source/sources of water that might be causing the flooding and close it.
  • You should stay away from any electrical devices. Better to shut down electric breaker.
  • If you find it safe, then you can take off the curtains, wet carpets, or draperies away from the water.
  • If you find it safe, remove anything that may stain your wet carpet, such as plats, shoes, papers, books, fabrics, etc.
  • Never use newspaper over your wet carpet for you to walk over them. The inks in the newspaper will get transferred to the carpet and mess up with your wet carpet.
  • If you can avoid walking on the wet carpet, it will be a good idea.
