7 Important Considerations When Moving to a New Home

Despite the thrill of living in a new home, the need to clean, pack boxes, and sort through belongings is quite a tedious set of tasks. However, with proper preparation and the help of a reliable local removalist, moving to a new home can be a smoother process.

If you want to make your move as stress-free as possible, see to it that you keep in mind the following:

1. Declutter

Once you begin sorting through your belongings, ask yourself if you still need all of those items. This way, it’ll be easier for you to categorise them based on what you can keep, sell or donate, and throw away.

Decluttering is the best way to save on packing expenses as you’ll no longer need to pack and pay to move things that you won’t need.

Consider having a garage sale for things you don’t want but can still be used. You can then use the proceeds from the garage sale to pay for other packing and moving expenses.

2. Pack by room

When packing, make sure that your boxes have labels that indicate their contents and which room they’re supposed to go to.

For boxes that contain items you’ll need as soon as you arrive such as basic clothing and toiletries, write an “open first” label on them. You can also add a number on each box and list that down in your inventory sheet for extra peace of mind.

Important items such as cheque books, passports, and medication should be set aside. Pack them separately from your everyday belongings and make sure not to put them inside boxes that will go into the moving truck.

3. Take an inventory

It’s important that you document the condition of your belongings before the removalists arrive.

Make a detailed list and take photos of each item for proof so that the moving company will be liable for any damages. Knowing that your items are in perfect condition before the move gives you some assurance that any damages incurred won’t become an added expense on your part.

4. Hire a removalist

A house move is something you can’t do on your own.

Hire a local removalist and get a removal quote in advance so that you can take that into account in your moving budget. Make sure to hire a reputable company that is licensed, offers insurance, and has good customer reviews to ensure the safety of your belongings.

5. Transfer or disconnect utilities

Schedule the disconnection or transfer of utilities ahead of time so that you have access to power and other services right away in your new home. It’s important that you do this before your move so that you won’t be continually charged for services you will no longer need.

When it comes to your Internet connection, providers often require their customers to book in advance. If Wi-Fi is highly essential in your new home, make sure to request for Internet connection as soon as possible. Living in a new home without access to the Web can be quite inconvenient, so save yourself from the hassle and book the service early.

6. Update your address

Do this as early as you can so that the new occupants of your old home won’t need to forward your mail.

Make sure to notify the post office about your new address and contact establishments from which you receive mail to ensure that your mail goes to the correct place. Moreover, don’t forget to do the following:

  • Inform your bank about your move.
  • Update your details on the electoral roll and superannuation funds.
  • Contact your car insurance company and update registration regarding your change of address.
  • Notify friends and family about new address and contact number.

7. Clean the new house

Your new home should be spic and span before your belongings arrive.

It’s simply much easier to unpack in a clean place with no dirt, dust, and clutter to ruin your mood. Instead of doing the cleaning yourself, let a professional cleaner handle the situation so deep cleaning, if required, would be one less worry to think about.

Plan well, move easy

The hassles of a house move are a normal part of the moving experience.

However, you can always reduce the stress, time and effort required with proper preparation and a positive attitude. By considering the above tips and getting professional removalists onboard, your relocation day will be a breeze.
